The Helikinuva (Eagle) Totem Pole Monday, April 19, 2004 Oakland ~ The City of Oakland is proud to announce that a traditional Tsimshian Totem Pole carved by a Pacific Northwest Tribe Indian named Helikinuva (Eagle) has been raised on Tuesday, April 13, 2004 in front of the Rotary Nature Center inside Lakeside Park.
To assist with the raising of the totem pole representatives from Union Electric Construction Incorporated, Parks & Recreation and Quantum General were on hand. The pole which was suspended in the air by a crane above the five foot hole in the ground was carefully placed into quick drying cement. The Totem Pole Project, which has been in the planning stages since 1998, has been made possible by the Rotary Nature Center, caring citizens and dedicated individuals. Thank you for helping to make this dream possible. The Totem Pole proudly rests as a watchful guardian of the Rotary Nature Center and Bird Sanctuary. “Totem Poles are traditional carving by the original inhabitants of the Pacific Northwest Coast. Red Cedar trees we usually used by here we are using cypress trees which came from Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California.”~ By Helikinuva (Eagle) For more information on the Rotary Nature Center and the Eagle Totem Pole, please contact Stephanie Benavidez, Naturalist at (510) 238-3739.
