A gallery of hearts in search of a home

From a simple idea of taking photographs of foster children seeking homes and displaying them in a gallery format -- a Heart Gallery -- has grown into a project that has touched many lives. The Bay Area Heart Gallery launches today in Oakland and then, on June 5, in San Francisco. During the next 12 months, it will travel to eight Bay Area counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara and Sonoma) in all.

The first Heart Gallery was the collaboration of a professional photographer and a social worker in New Mexico. Professional photographers, volunteering their time, took photos that let each child's unique spirit shine through. From that 2001 gallery, the idea caught on and spread to other states. In Hartford, Conn., for instance, of the 40 portraits on display, 19 of the children were later adopted.

Here in the Bay Area, the Heart Gallery is a partnership of public and private agencies serving children in foster care working together with community volunteers, photographers and artists to develop an exhibit of 50 photographs of children, youth and families. Professional photographer Robin Fryday spearheaded the Bay Area project.

No state has more children in foster care than California. We, as Californians, have the collective responsibility for more than 85,000 foster children, many in need of permanent homes. The Heart Gallery seeks to photograph a few of these children in the hopes of capturing a few hearts. To learn more, go to www.bayareaheartgallery.com
