Alameda County Fair is Looking for '04 Parade Entries

Pleasanton ~ The Alameda County Fair Association is looking for parade floats -- and marching bands, drill and dance teams, clowns, antique vehicles and horse teams.

The annual fair parade will meander through downtown Pleasanton on Saturday, June 26. But those who would rather be in the parade instead of watching it from the sidelines must apply by May 15.

The Fair Association prefers that floats not exceed 50 feet in length, including tow vehicle, but will consider larger entries. Any float longer than 50 feet, taller than 12 feet or wider than 10 feet must be authorized in writing by the Fair Association. This theme of this year's fair, "Come Out and Play," should give entrants plenty of creative leeway, fair officials say.

Drill, dance and baton teams must have at least six members to be considered. Teams that require vehicles to carry sound systems must notify parade organizers, and carts or vehicles must be decorated.

Owners of antique or unique vehicles may apply to be in the parade, but commercial vehicles such as vans, farm machinery and tractor-trailers are discouraged because of liability and safety concerns.

Equestrian teams must provide their own cleanup crew to follow their unit, and riders must be at least 8 years old.

Marching bands are expected to perform along the 1.5-mile parade route, where they'll be rated by a panel of professional judges.

The parade route begins at Amador Valley High School, proceeds south down Santa Rita Road and Main Street, then turns right on Rose Avenue. The parade takes a left turn on Pleasanton Avenue and enters the fairgrounds at the Yellow Gate.
