3rd Annual Agricultural Roots Fair
Friday, April 30, 2004

Oakland ~ The City of Oakland would like to invite everyone to attend the Agricultural Roots Fair taking place on Thursday, May 20 ~ Saturday, May 22, 2004. Representing the Office of Parks and Recreation (OPR) will be the Community Gardening Program and a variety of talented youth who participate in OPR programs and centers.

The 3rd Annual AgriCultural Roots Fair is a community event that celebrates and strengthens the connections of cultures to the land. The Fair features California’s many agricultural and culinary traditions and has a strong emphasis on sustainability and health. In 2002 and 2003, the AgriCultural Roots Fair took place at the Oakland Museum. This year, the Fair has moved across 10th Street to Laney College Channel Park, a 4-acre greenway along the estuary, in order to accommodate the new Youth Fair.

AgriCultural Roots Fair: A Walk Around Bay Area Farmlands
Thursday, May 20th and Friday, May 21, 2004 from 9:00 am ~ 2:00 pm
The Walk around Bay Area Farmlands will be a series of stations and activities representing regional agricultural areas—with their respective crops and farming traditions. Open as a field trip to 4th and 5th grade school groups, the Youth Fair will also feature tastings of locally grown produce, nutrition education and horticulture activities, recycling and composting education, games and physical activities, performances, mapping activities about local food and farms, and opportunities to meet Bay Area farmers, and learn about farm animals. Estimated attendance is 1,000 children per day.

AgriCultural Roots Fair
Saturday May 22, 2004 from 9:00 am ~ 4:00 pm
Free and open to the Public
In addition to the Walk Around Bay Area Farmlands, Saturday Fair will feature an expanded performance schedule, food booths from local ethnic restaurants, and educational information from many community organizations involved in promoting sustainable food and agriculture. A highlight will be a Trade Show that will foster marketing connections between local farmers and community members interested in subscribing to weekly farm box programs.
