Special Gatherings at the Rotary Nature Center
Monday, May 03, 2004

Oakland ~ The Rotary Nature Center held two very successful special community gatherings at Lakeside Park/Lake Merritt on Monday, April 26 from 6:30 ~ 8:30 p.m. and on Sunday, May 2, 2004 from 10:30 a.m. ~ 12:30 p.m. The center is located at 600 Bellevue Avenue in Oakland.

These gatherings were a great way for individuals and families touched by memories and visits of Lake Merritt's Bird Refuge and the Rotary Nature Center to share personal stories and reflections in a group setting.

Established in 1870, the oldest wildlife refuge in the United States allows the public to observe several species of resident and migratory waterfowl at close range. The refuge is home to a variety of migratory and permanent wildlife to include (but not limited to) black crown night herons, snowy egrets, Canadian geese, brown pelicans, cormorants, and king fishers.

A special note of appreciation goes out to everyone who helped to celebrate with the City of Oakland.

The idea behind this is to come together in community to share reflections about the birds so as to inspire each other and the artists working in this project and for historical preservation for the future of this land and refuge.” ~ Patricia Bulitt

The event was hosted by guest artist, dancer and project director Patricia Bulitt and refuge naturalist Stephanie Benavidez.

Constructed in 1953, the Rotary Nature Center is an interpretive establishment, providing education and information about the natural environment to its surrounding community.
