Keepers of Lake Merritt, Democracy Honored Posted in the Oakland Tribune on Saturday, April 17, 2004 Written by Staff Reporters Oakland ~ The City Public Ethics Commission and the Lake Merritt Institute will be honored Wednesday at the annual All-City Luncheon of the League of Women Voters of Oakland. This year's theme is "Keeping Oakland Clean." The luncheon is scheduled for noon at the Oakland Marriott City Center Hotel, 1001 Broadway. The ethics commission works to inform Oakland residents about their rights to obtain information about city government; create easier access to information and meetings of public bodies in the city; educate city officials, employees, board and commission members, and candidates for elected office about ethics laws; and investigate complaints about possible violations. The Lake Merritt Institute organizes volunteers to remove trash from Lake Merritt on a weekly basis; educates students and adults about urban runoff; maintains four aeration fountains in Lake Merritt to increase the oxygen content of the water; and provides the city with expertise in managing the lake. Bruce Cain, UC Berkeley political science professor and frequent commentator on radio and television, will be the keynote speaker. The luncheon is the major fund-raising effort for the League of Women Voters of Oakland, a nonpartisan political organization encouraging the informed and active participation of citizens in government. Tickets are $50 and can be obtained by calling (510) 834-7640. The Oakland Tribune: Cityside
