The Oakland Convention & Visitors Bureau plans to celebrate National Tourism Week from May 8 to 16. A Taste of Oakland -- set for Thursday, May 6, will kick off the celebration.

From 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, the Oakland Convention & Visitors Bureau will present "A Taste of Oakland" -- a celebration of the diversity and culture of Oakland through its ethnic blend of exotic and traditional foods.

Tickets will be available at the door for $45 at the Oakland Convention Center, 1001 Broadway. For more information, call 510-839-9000.

Travelers to Oakland spent $982 million in 2002, including air transportation, according to the California Travel and Tourism Association, supporting over 8,700 jobs. These travelers also generated $15.5 million in local tax revenue -- $10.4 million in lodging taxes and $5.5 million in sales tax.
