Bike day a move in right direction
Oaklanders urged to pedal to work May 18 in effort to ease congestion

Oakland — Oakland's Bike to Work Day, set for May 18, will give residents a chance to save gasoline and ease bumper-to-bumper traffic frustration, city officials say.

The East Bay event is part of a monthlong plan to encourage residents to park their cars and use alternative means of transportation.

"People should be exposed to new and exciting things," said Kathryn Hughes, the city's bicycle/pedestrian program manager. "If people try something for the first time, such as bicycling, they may, in fact, like it and stick to it."

Hundreds of people, including merchants and community leaders, are expected to participate in Bike to Work Day, city officials say.

There will be a complimentary pancake breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. at Frank H. Ogawa Plaza. The event will feature raffle prizes and opening remarks by Oakland Councilmember Pat Kernighan (Grand Lake-Chinatown).

In addition, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 14th Street and Broadway for the city's new "e-lockers," places to lock up bikes.

Bike riders are encouraged to use the electronic bicycle lockers, which are funded by a grant from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and Measure B funds. Cyclists can buy a "bike link card," similar to a BART ticket, to access an unoccupied locker.

It costs 5 to 10 cents an hour to use a locker. Currently, El Cerrito, Santa Cruz and Palo Alto have the lockers. Oakland officials are working with BART to select more locker locations.

As a follow up to Bike to Work Day, the Oakland Museum will offer a free bike tour on May 21 from 10 a.m. to noon. Docents will lead a two-hour trip along Oakland's bike trails. The deadline for reservations, which are required, is 5 p.m. May 19.
