The three first-place winners, who competed March 21-27 in San Francisco, will go on to compete at the California State Science Fair on May 24 and 25. "(Having) three students moving on to state is successful," said Beth Christopherson, who teaches the Integrated Science I classes at Piedmont High with Philip Blair, Joseph Bolger and Michael Geluardi. Sixty-six students participated in Piedmont High's science fair Feb. 11. They were judged by a panel of 30 judges. Entries in physical, biological and behavioral science categories demonstrated students' findings on subjects such as the effect of typical beverages on tooth health, the power of sugar to prolong the life of cut flowers, and how a mouse's appetite is affected by color. Eleven students were chosen to compete at the San Francisco Bay Area Science Fair. The 53rd annual state science fair, includes about 900 students statewide, in grades six through 12.
