New Shuttle to Serve Seniors in Oakland Posted in the Montclarion a publication of the Contra Costa Times on Friday May 21, 2004 Written by Staff Writers City Councilwoman Jane Brunner has unveiled a new shuttle to help seniors get from their homes to stores and senior centers. The presentation was made Thursday at Piedmont Gardens on Piedmont Avenue. Recent cuts in Alameda County bus service have seriously impacted seniors, she says, and existing paratransit services are only available during commute times and often limit the number of bags a passenger can take with them. "Many seniors are house-bound because they can't drive anymore; getting groceries for the week can be very difficult," Brunner said. "This shuttle will give seniors a way to shop and visit friends around the city." The senior shuttle will run in the middle of the day, when public transit is least available, and each shuttle will have a driver and an attendant who will help passengers with their bags and make sure they board safely. "Mobility is critical for independent living," the Brunner said. "Passengers can sign up beforehand or just hop on at a scheduled stop. They can carry as many bags as they need."
