Fairyland Stages Gala, Plans for Busy Summer

Thanks to a successful gala, Children's Fairyland supporters say the Oakland gem will continue to shine.

"Everybody loves Fairyland. There's nothing like Fairyland," said attorney Robert Kidd.

More than 200 Fairyland lovers gathered at Scott's Seafood Restaurant in Jack London Square on May 20 for the park's ninth gala fund-raiser.

Tweedle Dee, Tweedle Dum and other Fairyland personalities helped host the event, which included a silent and live auction for vacations, toys, food, wine and more.

Revenue generated from the event is set to support the theme park's general fund, which maintains the park and supports its daily activities.

"Children's Fairyland is a great place for Oakland's kids. I went there as a kid, took my kids. I want all kids to go and expand their imaginations," said David Stein, a hills resident and attorney.

The 10-acre park opened its doors in 1950. It was the first storybook-themed park in the country, says Fairyland Executive Director C.J. Hirschfield.

In 1994, the park entered into a special agreement with the city of Oakland. As a result, the city owns the park's land and pays its utilities, while the non-profit Fairyland organization manages the park's operations and restoration.

Popular live-auction items included 1,200 gallons of gas, a mansion "murder mystery" dinner to be held in Piedmont and a gondola ride on Lake Merritt.

The park will host a myriad of special events for kids and families, including the debut of a new Target Storytellers Series and a weekend-long Comcast extravaganza next month, Fairyland officials said. The events feature guests from Playhouse Disney, Animal Planet, KQED and Noggin.

"It's the only place where Humpty Dumpty can be put back together again," said Hirschfield.

The park hosts the 13th annual Rubber Ducky Derby benefiting Children's Hospital and Research Center at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 5.

Children's Fairyland is located on the shores of Lake Merritt, at 699 Bellevue Ave., off Grand Avenue. Summer hours begin June 9: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends. Admission is $6 per person, including rides and entertainment. Infants under 1 are free. For safety reasons, no adult is admitted without a child, and no child is admitted without an adult.
