Sand sculpture contest returns to Alameda Posted in the Contra Costa Times on Friday, June 1, 2007 by Ned MacKay One of my all-time favorite East Bay Regional Park District events is scheduled for its 41st outing on Saturday, June 9. It's the annual Sand Castle and Sand Sculpture Contest at Crown Beach in Alameda. Although some of the sand art is impressive, to say the least, this isn't a competition dominated by professionals. It's a family-friendly event with room for all ages and skill levels. And it's free. Nor is there any vast amount of prize money at stake. Winners receive ribbons, castle-shaped trophies and bragging rights that last until tidal action returns their entries to the sea. Competitors can choose to create either a castle or a sculpture on a 10-foot square of sand. Judges award prizes in the categories of youth (children), families or adults, and there's a best-of-show award for both castle and sculpture. Spectators have almost as much fun as competitors, viewing creativity on display. The contest is co-sponsored by the East Bay Regional Park District, Bay View Women's Club and the Alameda Recreation and Parks Department. Registration starts at 9 a.m., viewing and judging begin at noon, and prizes are awarded at 1 p.m. The Crown Beach entrance is at of Eighth Street and Otis Drive in Alameda. There's a $5 fee for parking. For more information about the contest, call 510-521-6887. Contra Costa Times |
