Oakland Ballet Extends Fund Drive Posted in the Oakland Tribune on Friday, June 04, 2004 Written by Laura Casey, Staff Writer Dance Troupe Needs $150,000 for 2005 Season Oakland ~ Because they came up 40 percent short of the $500,000 needed to present a 2005 season, Oakland Ballet officials have extended the company's "Keep Us Dancing" fund-raising campaign to the end of this month. "Given a little bit more time, we will be able to reach our goal," Oakland Ballet Executive Director Tony Caparelli said Wednesday. In April, the Oakland Ballet announced it was canceling its 39th season. It has been in financial trouble since the fall 2002 season, when disappointing "Nutcracker" ticket sales failed to shore up an already thin budget. Ballet leaders last year asked the community to support its dance troupe by attending performances and making donations. But ticket sales remained slow, and the ballet had to cancel one of its October 2003 performances. The company must raise $500,000 to get out of the red to renew performances next year, Caparelli said. On June 1, at the end of the two-month "Keep Us Dancing" campaign, the Oakvland Ballet Association had raised $300,000 -- $150,000 from private donors and a $150,000 matching grant from the Hewlett Foundation. The Hewlett Foundation has promised an additional $50,000 if the ballet can raise a matching sum. That means ballet officials must raise $150,000 by the end of the month to stay in business in the new fiscal year. It did get a boost from the city this week. While reviewing Oakland's budget, Councilmember Nancy Nadel (Downtown-West Oakland) said she would be hunt for any extra money that could be used to prevent the ballet from going under. And City Manager Deborah Edgerly said that after meeting with officials from the Oakland Ballet, she agreed to restructure a $37,000 city loan to the organization, which was to have been repaid this year. Edgerly told the council she had been assured by ballet officials the extra time to repay the loan would allow the ballet to obtain a grant from the Hewlett Foundation to stay afloat. Caparelli said that $37,000 has not yet been included in the $150,000 the organization has raised so far.
