Oakland ~ Residents looking for something more than fireworks and picnics on the upcoming July 4th weekend can grab their hammers and screwdrivers and join East Bay Habitat for Humanity members to start building six new West Oakland homes during the group's Independence Day Build-a-Thon.

Following a July 1 kickoff ceremony, the group will be framing six houses in the next four days on its site at 10th and Union streets. Participants must raise a minimum of $100 per day in pledges to build.

East Bay Habitat for Humanity provides homes with an interest-free mortgage to low-income families throughout the East Bay. For more information, visit www.eastbayhabitat.org
