Community of Spirit Program Parks for Peace and Project Mosaic For Immediate Release on Thursday, June 14, 2007 For more information contact Jennifer Koney at (510) 238-6644. In response to the increased street violence in Oakland, the High Street neighborhood and community partners formed a consortium to develop constructive, creative ways to address the problem of street violence and created The Community of Spirit Program comprised of two phases: Parks for Peace and Project Mosaic. Working together with the City of Oakland Office of Parks and Recreation on the neighborhood level, we believe that we can bring about a transformation in Oakland, one neighborhood at a time. Parks for Peace calls for reclaiming our neighborhoods commencing with the symbolic action of the rededicating 23 parks and recreation centers for peace, neighborhood by neighborhood. The first of the 23 park dedications will begin on Saturday, August 11, 2007 at Brookdale Park. Each park will be declared a safe, neighborhood space for peaceful uses only by installing a Peace Pole at the park and hanging white ribbons - designating peace - from the trees and fences. These park-by-park rededications will involve neighborhood schools, places of worship, businesses, and the neighborhood associations in each area. Schools and places of worship in neighborhoods will be encouraged to erect their own peace poles simultaneously. One to two parks per month will be dedicated to peace starting in August 2007 and by the end of the year-long project, the Parks for Peace project will culminate with a peace parade on Sunday, September 21, 2008 International Day of Peace. The parade will converge at San Antonio Park for a "Parks for Peace Festival" to include live music, food, and speakers. The Parks for Peace project opens the door for connecting community partners to address street violence. Once our parks have been designated for peace and community partners have connected to address violence, Project Mosaic tackles the ongoing task of transforming Oakland piece by piece through the creation of a broad range of human services that emphasize positive programs for youth and families. Project Mosaic calls upon the faith community by invitation, working with the Oakland Coalition of Congregations and other faith-based groups, to join neighborhood associations, the Oakland business community, schools, recreation centers, and all youth-serving organizations to work together in a co-coordinated effort in renewing the human services needed to transform Oakland from a city plagued by violence into a model city of co-operation and peace. Project Mosaic is undertaken with the intent of being a permanent, on-going program in Oakland. However, it will support, participate in and use the "Parks for Peace" project as its springboard in beginning the community action to reduce violence in Oakland. City of Oakland |
