Oakland Symphony season Posted in the San Francisco Chronicle on Friday, June 17, 2005 Written by Staff Writers A new commissioned work by composer Guillermo Galindo and poet devorah major, recent music by Kevin Puts and Mason Bates, and a performance of Dvorák's "Stabat Mater" are among the highlights of the Oakland East Bay Symphony's 2005-06 season under Music Director Michael Morgan. The six-concert season in the Paramount Theatre opens Nov. 18 with the world premiere of Galindo and major's "Trade Routes," featuring the Oakland Symphony Chorus under Magen Solomon; the Prelude to Mussorgsky's "Khovanshchina" and Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony complete the program. On Jan. 20, Bryan Nies conducts Puts' Symphony No. 3, "Vespertine," co- commissioned by the orchestra as part of the Magnum Opus program. Rufus Olivier will be the soloist in Mozart's Bassoon Concerto, and Brahms' Second Symphony completes the program. The Feb. 24 program features Hope Briggs, Lisa van der Ploeg, Kalil Wilson and Craig Phillips singing the Dvorák and the overture to Mozart's "Lucio Silla." Bates' "Omnivorous Furniture" is scheduled for March 24, along with Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 in D with soloist Tai Murray, Elgar's "Introduction and Allegro" and Beethoven's Second Symphony. Violinist Karla Donehew, winner of the orchestra's Young Artist Competition, will perform Ravel's "Tzigane" on April 21, in a program that includes Mozart's Symphony No. 25 in G Minor and Wilhelm Stenhammar's Symphony No. 2. The season concludes May 19 with the annual "Let Us Break Bread Together, " featuring the Oakland Symphony Chorus, Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and Lucy Kinchen Chorale.
