Studio One's Summer 2005
For Immediate Release
on Friday, June 24, 2005

Wednesday June 29, from 2:00 ~ 4:00 pm, Come In and Play the OPR Way at Studio One Art Center's downtown Oakland home. The Studio's 1428 Alice Street location is within the Malonga Casquelourd Center (formerly known as The Alice Arts Center) - a draw for the most artistically gifted in the nation. Studio One staff will be available to help you enjoy free art making, and to talk about the summer classes we are offering. We can let you know about the progress that is being made by the City of Oakland Parks and Recreation Department to include Black & White Print Photography, and Kiln Fired Clay and Soldered Jewelry classes for the Fall Session in our new location. The groundwork for those activities is still being laid.

Also in progress is Studio One's registration for 8 weeks of summer classes (Tues. July 5 - Mon. Aug. 29). You can register with the Art Center online at /parks/registration/, visit us on Alice Street, or call (510) 597-5027, Monday through Friday 9-5. While the Studio offers a wealth of artistic experiences to your children who are 12-14 years old, Monday through Friday, 1:30-3:30, you can enjoy the Art Center's mother lode of Adult classes. There is a Saturday morning Wire Works class available for children 7 & older accompanied by an adult 18 years old and above. The City's progress with the Studio's Alice Street facility will determine when we will be able to accommodate younger children with ongoing classes. It has been proven for over 57 years at Studio One that adults can more easily get things done while youth are with each other.

Only 15 participants will be registered in each of our popular classes: drawing, painting, creating wire works, working with self-hardening clay, printmaking, Fimo sculpting and mask making.

No children you say? It's your comfort we care about. You can rest assuredly on a Yoga mat Tuesday mornings from 9:30-11:00 am. You'd rather not Yoga? Then take the popular 9:30 -12:30 Glass Fusing & Slumping class on Tuesday mornings.

Ah, but wait, this is how our week begins:

  • Monday afternoon is a Figure Drawing lab (access to a model but, no instruction), and after a day's work, a Basic Drawing class is available with instruction on Monday nights. Since the July 4 holiday is a Monday, these classes will start July 11.

  • Tuesday nights there is a Wire, Rope and Chain Jewelry class, and a Glass Fusing & Slumping class. Studio One's widely acclaimed Intro to Glass Bead Making and Glass Beadmaking, Continued classes will take place at Dimond Recreation Center, 3860 Hanly Road this season. Registration is through Studio One.

  • Wednesday nights from 5:30-7:00 pm you can ease into Yoga with Meditation. A different teacher also teaches this class on Wednesday mornings. A Stained Glass class also takes place on Wednesday evenings. If you want to stay with us all day, a Wet & Wild Watercolor class can fill your Wednesday afternoons from 1:30-4:30 pm.

  • Thursday's choices are afternoon Figure Drawing and Human Figure in Movement classes, and a No Solder Chain Jewelry class in the evening.

  • Friday mornings another figure drawing lab is offered. These labs will be great for you if you don't have time or space to practice at home. On Friday afternoons come and enjoy the outdoors in the Painting En Plein Air class.

  • Drawing for Sculpture on Saturday mornings, The Head, Hands, Feet & Figure in Clay (non-hardening clay) on Saturday afternoons, along with special one day sessions of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain & The Artist's Way in August complete our summer offerings.

If you can absorb even more, come for a fun afternoon on July 8 from 2:00-4:00 pm to celebrate the kick-off of National Recreation & Parks Month. During the following week, on Thursday July 14 from 6:00-8:00 pm, renowned photographer Rick Rocamora invites the public to view his photographs during a free reception. His work will remain on display through Monday August 29, the last day of Studio One's summer program.
