Marj Saunders Park Dedication Saturday, July 03, 2004 Oakland ~ The City of Oakland, Office of Parks and Recreation presented the Marj Saunders Park Dedication on Saturday, June 26, 2004 at 10:30 am between the intersection of Ascot and Chelton. Introductory remarks were made by Dick Spees, President of Piedmont Pines Neighborhood Association and former City Councilmember, who graciously introduced Marj Saunders. On behalf of Oakland Parks & Recreation, the Director Audree Jones-Taylor thanked Marj for her commitment and involvement with the community. After opening remarks, a beautiful citrus tree was planted in Marj's honor, and overlooking the park was a large rock (at the corner of the intersection) which was festively painted to commemorate the dedication. As reported in The Contra Costa Times in February 20, 2004, Marj Saunders has been a vocal advocate for the preservation of open space in the hills for many years in Oakland. She is very active at 95 years young, a hills resident who participates in every Earth Day event and Piedmont Pines cleanups. The City of Oakland is proud to show appreciation to Marj Saunders by dedicating a park in her honor, as a small token for all that she has done for Oakland.
