Corte Madera woman takes Woodminster Posted in the Contra Costa Times on Friday, June 23, 2006 by Dave Carpenter Nearly 200 runners spent part of Father's Day participating in the 41st annual Dick Houston Memorial Woodminster Race at Joaquin Miller Park on Sunday. Corte Madera resident Jamie Berns was the overall winner in the 9-mile cross country race that is handicapped by age and gender. Berns, 55, ran the course through the Oakland hills in 1 hour, 12 minutes and 48 seconds. She was one of 169 who finished the race. Berns was also fastest in the senior female category. Steve Stephens (1:14.11), Diane Dove (1:14.55), Jeff Teeters (1:15.13) and Jenny Wong (1:16.00) made up the rest of the top five handicapped times. Oakland High School's Thomas Dileo ran the race in the fastest overall time of 56:50. The 17-year-old won the open male division, and his handicapped time of 1:16.40 was eighth overall. Dileo also had the fastest high school boys time. No high school girls participated in the Woodminster. Wong was fastest in the female open division in 1:08.00. The 31-year-old won her division in last year's Woodminster race. Wong also won the open female division in the Lake Chabot Trail Challenge on June 4 in Castro Valley. That is the second leg of the East Bay Triple Crown. The Woodminster is the final leg. The first race of the triple crown was the Tilden Tough 10 in Berkeley on May 21. The fastest male senior in the Woodminster was Roberto Donaire. The 52-year-old finished in 1:09.55, which was a handicapped time of 1:21.55. That was good for 21st overall. The Woodminster is the oldest annual run in the East Bay. Next year's race already has been slated for June 17, 2007. Contra Costa Times |
