Seniors: On your mark, get set, go! Lake Merritt site of Healthy Living Festival Posted in the Oakland Tribune on Wednesday, July 5, 2006 by Karen Holzmeister Oakland Few places are prettier this time of year than Lake Merritt, where people gather to eat, share information and walk around the lake's 3-mile circumference. On July 14, all these activities are possible for senior citizens plus family and friends at Healthy Living Festival from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The festival, which will be celebrating its third year with an expected 2,000 participants, is organized by the United Seniors of Oakland and Alameda County. County supervisors Nate Miley and Gail Steele are on the organizing committee. Miley also is the organization's executive director. The event will be held at the Lake Merritt Garden Center, 666 Bellevue Ave. The center, near Children's Fairyland, is accessible from the 19th Street BART station and AC Transit buses. United Seniors will provide shuttle services. A resource fair will provide free health screenings, and organizations will offer senior service information. The highlight of the day is a walk-a-thon. Teams that participate in the walk around the lake. and that solicit donations benefiting United Seniors and Alameda County Meals on Wheels, will be eligible for prizes.
