Lake Merritt Boating Center programs voted Best of the Bay! Posted in The SF Bay Guardian in the July 28-August 3, 2004 Issue - Vol. 38, No. 44 Readers of the San Francisco Bay Guardian say that Lake Merritt is the best place for a sailing trip on a budget. "If you've got City Hall off the port bow, it's likely you're sailing on Oakland's Lake Merritt, where the Lake Merritt Boating Center offers an hour's nautical vacation in the middle of a bustling metropolis. And it won't even set you back as much as a week of BART commuting: sailboat rentals are $8 to $12 an hour - just enough time for a couple of turns around the lake. Lake Merritt is perfect for the novice sailor who wants no chance of getting blown out to sea, and it also holds challenges for experts in keeping those sails trimmed in erratic or light winds. Mostly, though, it's a perfect way to spend an hour doing something you never associated with downtown. There's something strange and wonderful about sailing in the shadow of the high-rises and museums. And while you're there, consider hiring the neighboring Gondola Servizio for a romantic twilight cruise. SF Bay Guardian
