Work Under Way at Berkley Square Posted in The Montclarion on Friday, August 06, 2004 Written by Tricia Caspers Ground has been broken at Thomas L. Berkley Square -- named for the late Oakland hills resident, attorney and newspaper publisher, who died in 2002 after working to ethnically integrate his enterprises and community. The site, at Thomas L. Berkley Way (formerly 20th Street) and San Pablo Avenue, is set to house the Alameda County Social Services Agency Headquarters and North County Center for Self-Sufficiency Corporation. The group helps residents move from welfare to work while assisting low-income families, said Barbarette Newton, a spokesperson for Strategic Urban Development Alliance, the group developing the project. The Post Newspaper Building, formerly owned by Berkeley, and the Royal Hotel will be razed to accommodate the four-story mixed-use project. The first phase of the development, expected to be completed by the end of 2005, will also include public facilities, a parking structure, and 5,000 square feet of retail space, Newton said. The development is being constructed with $52.2 million of state bond funds. The project's second phase, set to start development in late 2006, will include housing, retail space and a live-music venue. Reach Tricia Caspers at 510-748-1682 or ## tcaspers@cctimes.com.
