Latino Community Organizations Embrace the FUNdamentals of Fitness with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey ® to Improve Health Amongst Latino Youth
CircusFit SM Event Will Take Place at Josie de la Cruz Park in Oakland

For Immediate Release
on Monday, August 7, 2006
by Kristan Almgren

Oakland, CA - Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® has teamed up with three nonprofit organizations that all share a vision of a healthy Bay Area. The Latino Community Foundation, the Unity Council, and La Clínica de la Raza, together with Ringling Bros.' CircusFit SM program want to send a message to their community that exercise, good nutrition, and an engaged community are vital components to healthy communities. The fact that almost 40% of all Latino children (in the US) are overweight is an astounding statistic. Obesity and being overweight are major contributors to many preventable causes of death. Poor nutrition, lack of physical activity and excessive weight can lead to many complications: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Type II diabetes, heart disease, gallbladder disease, joint problems, sleep disturbances, and asthma among others.

Noticias Univision 14 senior news anchor Luis Echegoyen will be the emcee for this exciting summer children's event as the songstress of the circus Jennifer Fuentes, and fun-loving Ringling Bros. clowns and dancers lead children and their parents in a series of fun and engaging stretching and aerobic exercises. There will also be raffles to win free tickets to opening night of The Greatest Show On Earth® circus at the Oakland Arena, August 17th.

The event comes at a critical time in US Latino history. With the help of exercise programs like CircusFit SM, children will receive the message that exercise can be fun, entertaining and even a possible career choice. Jane Garcia, Chief Executive Officer of La Clínica de la Raza states that, "Without an organized response from within the Latino community to counter the disturbing trend, the first generation of Latinos born after the year 2000 will live fewer years than their parents." La Clínica offers access to care, and health education throughout the East Bay. The Unity Council offers after school fitness programs, and year round farmers markets where families can purchase healthy food at affordable prices and to keep our children fit. "By working together, the community can make changes to help keep our children and our communities healthy", asserts Gilda Gonzales, Chief Executive Officer of The Unity Council.

"We are thrilled to partner with Ringling Bros ® and the CircusFit SM program," says Viola Gonzales, Executive Director of The Latino Community Foundation, "to increase resources and the well-being of our Latino communities."
