The Friends of Faith, a nonprofit organization begun by the late KTVU anchor Faith Fancher in 1997 after she was diagnosed with breast cancer, will hold its first "Walk for the Cure" at Lake Merritt in Oakland.

Fancher shared her battle with breast cancer in a three-part television series called "Faith's Story." For nearly seven years, she continued her fight while tirelessly helping raise awareness and money to help grass-roots programs to benefit low-income women with dreaded disease. Fancher died in 2003.

Friends of Faith is continuing her efforts in what is expected to become an annual event.

Registration for "Walk for the Cure" has been extended to the day of the event, Saturday, Aug. 20. The walk is from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and begins at Children's Fairyland, 699 Bellevue Ave., Oakland. For more information visit www.faithfancher.org or call 510-483-2484.
