Adding Color to Oakland StreetFest
Giant mural to attract amateur painters at weekend's annual Chinatown event

Oakland ~ What looks like three jumbo white panels of wood at the Oakland Asian Cultural Center on Monday will by Sunday be a colorful mural celebrating Chinatown festivals.

And anyone who can hold a paint brush is invited to help create it.

The 17th annual Chinatown StreetFest will be held Saturday and Sunday and is expected to be the biggest StreetFest ever, attracting more than 100,000 people.

"I think it's going to be a fun year for all," said StreetFest organizer Jennie Ong, executive director of the Oakland Chinatown Chamber of Commerce. "I think we have something for everybody."

The mural is a new project the cultural center is offering to help liven up StreetFest this year. It is composed of several layers of images that include the geographic layout of the district, renditions from photos of performers from StreetFests in past years and depictions of famous Chinatown buildings, Oakland Asian Cultural Center program coordinator Nicole Chan said.

"This is our first year making the mural and we look forward to doing it again and again," Chan said.

The three panels will travel around to different city events and more will be added each year at StreetFest.

The making of the mural, which is supported by the Alameda County Arts Commission and the Port of Oakland, will be as easy for the average visitor to do as a paint-by-numbers book, where a number on the mural will correspond with a color of paint. Brushes and paints are provided.

While some people like to paint, others like to eat -- and eat well. This year's What's Cooking theme is "Oodles of Noodles" and will feature Thai, Chinese, Italian, Korean and Japanese noodle demonstrations. The Fu Wang of San Francisco will demonstrate lively noodle pulling, or lamien, and T.J. Robinson of the Gingerbread House Restaurant will reveal some cooking secrets from Louisiana.

StreetFest is known for its many stages featuring cultural performances from local artists, young and old. This year, the event will have four stages and host the Yellow River Drummers, Fusion Latina Dance Company, Zen and Chi Productions and other entertainers. A kids' stage will feature magicians, folk dancers, and performers from Children's Fairyland.

And the Cultural Village coordinated by the Oakland Museum of California will be back this year, "to make StreetFest a little more fun and hands-on for the people who come," Ong said.

The museum offers activities such as rice paper scroll making, oriental fan decorating, Korean paper folding, Indian henna tattoo and crepe flower making.

StreetFest is free and will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. It is on Franklin Street between Seventh and 11th streets and on Eigth and Ninth streets between Broadway and Harrison.
