Around musical world in several blocks Sounds of Art and Soul festival to be heard this weekend Posted in the Oakland Tribune on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 by Robin Higgins Oakland The atoms in the air seem to sizzle with anticipation. All of a sudden a high E-flat is belted out on the trumpet. No, wait the lead guitar of a punk band blasts a power chord. Then five African drums start beating fiercely. These are only a few of the sounds expected this weekend on the five stages of Oakland's sixth Art and Soul festival. Sponsored by Comcast, the festival will feature about 40 musicians, such as Rickie Lee Jones, Angie Stone, Goapele and New Found Glory, plus 180 art and information booths. Held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday through Monday, the festival will take place over several blocks. About 70,000 people are expected, a huge increase since the festival's first year of 20,000. The festival also hosts an extensive kid's fun zone, complete with face painting, rides, inflatable bouncers, magic and a storytelling tent. "You have any form of the arts that one wants to indulge in, all in three days," said Ronnie Stewart, executive director of the Bay Area Blues Society and a guitarist. Stewart has been a part of the festival since its beginning, and loves performing and producing for it. "It captures all ofthe spirit in its name," Stewart said. Heather L. Henry, owner of HLD Ware, has sold her sterling silver jewelry at every Art and Soul festival so far, and said she especially likes it because of the great music and the community vibe. Event producer Samee Roberts said the festival started in 2001 when the city decided it needed a replacement for Festival at the Lake. Tickets are $5 a day, free for children 12 and younger. The festival can be reached easily by taking BART to Oakland City Center/12th Street exit. Find more information at www.ArtandSoulOakland.com or by calling (510) 444-CITY.
