The Art and Soul Festival, which takes over the streets surrounding Frank Ogawa Plaza in downtown Oakland from 11 am to 6 pm, Sept. 4, 5, and 6, will feature several Oakland hills' residents.

  • Singer and instrumentalist Greg Lamboy, a Piedmont resident who founded the New Acoustic Movement for songwriters, will perform at the plaza stage, 1:30 to 2:30 pm, Sunday, Sept. 5.

  • Guitarist Paul Wood, who grew up in Montclair, is the only surviving member of John Lee Hooker's original Coast to Coast Blues Band. He will perform at the plaza stage, 1:30 to 2:30 pm Monday Sept. 6.

  • The Oakland Jazz Choir, a 40-voice, multi-cultural ensemble features many members from the Oakland hills. They will perform traditional and contemporary jazz arrangements at the plaza stage, 4:30 to 5:30 pm, Sunday, Sept. 5.

  • The Pacific Boychoir, also featuring Oakland hills' members, will perform at the plaza stage, 11:45 am to 12:15 pm, Monday, Sept. 6.

Other features of the festival are performances by Los Lobos, Patty Griffin, and Mindy Smith -- 60 bands in all.

Family activities include carnival rides and games, the Jurassic Adventure obstacle course, arts and craft activities, clowns and face painting. Children may visit with a Wild Thing, Winnie the Pooh, and Curious George. Magicians, storytellers and sing-along musicians will perform at the children's stage.

Artists including Casper Banjo, The Crucible, TheArthur Wright and Nicola McCarthy, will exhibit their art work and demonstrate various techniques.

The Oakland Literature Expo will showcase well-known and emerging authors, young poets, and poetry and literature from around the world. Self-publishing and First Amendment panels will be offered, as well as a writing workshop.

The Voices of Civil Rights Bus Tour, a national touring exhibit, features a 1960s malt shop counter similar to those where many sit-ins occurred.

An interactive display will allow visitors to record their own experiences with the civil rights movement.

Admission to the festival is $5 per day at the main gate. The Frank Ogawa Plaza is located between 12th and 14th Streets at Broadway. For more information, call (510) 444-2489 or go to www.artandsouloakland.com.
