Oakland skater, 11, finds success on ice Posted in the Oakland Tribune on Friday, September 15, 2006 by Sandra Wiederkehr It was a weekend full of excitement for ice skater Kiley Pearl of Oakland. The 11-year-old Montera Middle School girl, who attended Montclair Elementary, placed third in the preliminary artistic program and fifth in the preliminary girls free style -- the technical program -- at this past weekend's 26th annual Skate St. Moritz at the Oakland Ice Center. Kiley said before the competition that sometimes she's OK with a good showing "but I like winning. It's fun." Kiley crams her love of ice skating into a busy schedule, which is already full with school, homework and other activities. "She's a hard worker," said Stephanie Velasquez-Pearl, Kiley's mom. "She doesn't give up and keeps going out at whatever she does, and she does a lot of things besides ice skating." Kiley -- and her mother -- admitted to a case of the nerves on the day of the competition. "I breathe in and out and if I get really nervous, I think to myself the competition is just one day and after that it's over," Kiley said. It was Kiley's sister, Kelsey, who brought her into ice skating. Five years ago on a day at the Oakland Ice Center, she said: "I want to try that." Since then, she has completed each class at the center successfully. "We had no idea that when she started her snowball classes here at the Oakland Ice Center that we would be this far because they had many classes here that started at a very low level," Velasquez-Pearl said. "She just kept moving up in her levels and doing very well." Meanwhile, Kiley attends private classes and prepares for upcoming competitions. Last year, she was successful in two important ice skating competitions, the Skate St. Moritz and the Central Pacific Regional Championships. On Sept. 17, 2005, at the Skate St. Moritz held at the Oakland Ice Center and hosted by the St. Moritz Ice Skating Club, Kiley placed sixth for her pre-preliminary 3 girls free skate. On Sept. 18, 2005, she placed first -- a gold -- for her pre-preliminary artistic. A month later, on Oct. 19, 2005, at the Central Pacific Regional Championships held in Salt Lake City, Utah, she placed second for her pre-preliminary girls free skate. Next month, at the Central Pacific Regional Championships, which will be held Oct. 2-7 at the Oakland Ice Center, Kiley will compete at the preliminary level. She will perform an axel, double sal chow and a double toe loop. Although ice skating takes up a big part of time, Kiley has other activities like ballet and violin classes. She knows that school is most important. When asked for her future plans, the young girl was undecided about ice skating as a career or just a hobby. "I don't have a goal," Kiley said. "So far, it's just for fun." Oakland Tribune |
