Oakland Library Receives Grant for East Indian Items Posted in the Oakland Tribune on Monday, September 20, 2004 Written by Oakland Tribune Staff Writers Oakland ~ The Oakland Public Library's Golden Gate Branch has received a $25,000 grant from the California State Library to buy books and other materials written in the Indian languages of Punjabi and Hindi. According to library officials, as East Indian membership to the Golden Gate Branch has grown, so has a demand for books, periodicals and DVDs in their language. The Asian Branch Library, located in Chinatown, also will receive money to buy materials catering to its East Indian clientele. "Right now, these patrons are checking out the same materials over and over again from our small East Indian collection," grant writer Gracie Woodward said. The grant requires library staff to meet with library members to help decide which materials should be bought. Woodward said she plans to meet with bilingual and English-only speakers. The library will buy books by popular authors, music and DVDs, including movies made in India's Bollywood, the region's highly reputed film and music hub. The purchases will be geared toward adults, children and teens. Woodward said many teens of East Indian descent attend schools near the Golden Gate library branch at 5606 San Pablo Ave. and volunteer at the library. For more information on how to be part of the group that will suggest materials for the library to purchase, call Woodward at 597-5023. The Oakland Tribune: Cityside
