Treats Plentiful for Halloween

Just in time for All Hallows' Eve, the East Bay is hosting a variety of events celebrating everything from Halloween to harvest time. Here's a sampling of seasonal activities open to all:

Friday
The Downtown Berkeley YMCA hosts its annual Halloween Haunt from 5 to 9 p.m.. Spend a spooky evening in the haunted house, romp in the Kindergym and swim in the bat cave. A special tour of the haunted house with the lights turned on will be available 5 to 7 p.m.

Haunted house tickets are $3 per person, and carnival passes good for all of the games are also $3. The Downtown Berkeley YMCA is at 2001 Allston Way. Call 665-3264 or visit www.baymca.org/index.php/downtown.html.

Also Friday, the Montclair Lions Club sponsors the Montclair Village Halloween Parade. The parade begins at 3:45 p.m. on Mountain Boulevard in front of the Montclair Park steps. Free balloons will be distributed before the parade, and treats will be available in the park after the parade. Call 869-2374 or visit montclair.lionwap.org.

Saturday
Bay Street and the Emeryville Recreation Department host a free Harvest Festival from noon to 4 p.m. with activities for kids and entertainment for adults. Bay Street is off Interstate 80 at Shellmound in Emeryville. Call 655-4002 or visit www.baystreetemeryville.com

The Berkeley Farmers Market offers free hands-on costume making for all ages and a per formance by kid-friendly musician Asheba. The Berkeley Farmers Market runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Center Street at Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Call 548-3333 or visit www.ecologycenter.org/bfm/

Also Saturday, the New School of Berkeley holds a free Halloween Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1606 Bonita St., Berkeley. There will be face painting, children's games, apple bobbing, a giant rummage sale, crafts, a haunted house and live entertainment. Call 548-9165.

Lawrence Hall of Science, Centennial Drive off Grizzly Peak Boulevard in Berkeley, offers an evening with magician Magic Mike from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday. Admission for members is $10 adults and $8 children. For nonmembers, admission is $12 and $10. For tickets, call 642-5134 or visit www.lawrencehallofscience.org.

Meanwhile, Webster Street in Alameda will be invaded by Halloween creatures from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday with merchants offering goodies for children. Free pumpkins available between 2 and 3 p.m. at the parking lot at Webster and Taylor streets. There will be a costume contest in the parking lot at 3 p.m. with prizes for children.

For young revelers, the Jack O'Lantern Jamboree at Children's Fairyland on Saturday and Sunday is billed as "more delightful than frightful."

For $8 per person, Children's Fairyland offers costume parades, unlimited rides, arts and crafts, creatively crafted tunnels and "spooktacular"-themed schools.

Sunday
The El Cerrito Recreation Department hosts a "Safe Halloween" at the El Cerrito Community Center, 7007 Moeser Lane. From 4 to 6 p.m., a nonscary haunted house will be open for young children with the lights on. Admission is $1 per person. From 6:30 to 9 p.m., the scary haunted house will open for older children with the lights on. Admission is $3 per person.

Children also can participate in tailgate trick-or-treating in the parking lot. Individuals are invited to bring their decorated cars and distribute candy from 6 to 8 p.m. Call 559-7000 or visit www.el-cerrito.org/recreation/.

Greater St. Paul Baptist Church hosts a Hallelujah Day carnival and community festival from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at 1827 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Oakland. The event includes carnival games, rides and refreshments.
