Safe bike parking, repairs offered

Bicyclists who want to ride BART will find an added benefit at the Fruitvale station in Oakland: the nation's second largest bicycle parking lot and repair center.

The station offers free parking for 240 bikes, as well as a full service repair and sales shop at the new Fruitvale Village transit center.

"Too many of our customers get their bikes stolen at the Fruitvale BART station," said Gene Oh, owner of Alameda Bicycles, which operates the shop. "What starts as high hopes for commuting and exercising by bike ends suddenly after theft."

Not anymore, BART and Fruitvale Village officials hope. Bicyclists can safely lock up their bikes in an attended storage facility. Mechanics will be on hand if bicycles need repairs.

Riders can reserve spaces online at www.bartbikes.com.
