Be prepared next time your kids ask that question on your family hike. The National Arbor Day Foundation has an 84-page pocket guide that will help you identify the 157 different trees found in the Western United States. The booklet includes well-known oaks, maples and pines as well as lesser-known species such as the peachleaf willow and saltcedar. The guide illustrates trees' leaves, needles, acorns, berries and cones and will help you identify trees step by step.

To obtain a guide send your name, address and $3 to
