California Dragon Boat Association College Championships on Lake Merritt For Immediate Release on Wednesday, December 7, 2005 On Saturday, November 12, 2005 Oakland Parks and Recreation (OPR) and California Dragon Boat Association (CDBA) co-sponsored the First Annual CDBA College Championships on Lake Merritt. UC Berkeley's Cal A team took the honors and a huge dragon trophy that will be passed from winner to winner each year.
![]() This event provided an opportunity for Parks and Recreation's newly created High School Youth dragonboating team, the Rubber Duckies, to enter two exhibition races against the Alameda Fish Stix. Coach Chris Yee of the Rubber Duckies said the race "was a great way for the youth teams to get their (duck) feet wet in a race. Even though this was not an official race for them, it was a great experience to see how races are run and to see great teams race. They were thrilled with the medals and some said that they did not want to take their wrist bands off. It was a memorable day for them." Parks and Recreation plans to expand the high school youth dragonboating opportunities next year with practices starting up again in March.
