Fairyland Set to Glow

Children's Fairyland will become even more enchanting later this month when, for the first time, it will stay open after dark, park officials say.

For one week, Dec. 17 through 23, the park will be transformed into "Fairy Winterland," featuring nightly visits by Santa Claus, a puppet version of "The Nutcracker" and live performances by the Children's Fairyland Storybook Personalities of holiday songs throughout the world, including Kwanzaa, Las Posadas, and Chinese New Year.

And in an ecumenical gesture, Santa -- aka St. Nick -- will lead the Chanukah Festival of Lights parade on Dec. 17.

Instead of closing at its usual time, 4 p.m., the park will stay open until 7 p.m., illuminated by thousands of tiny twinkling lights.

"Fairyland at night is really magical, but not many people ever have a chance to see it," said Executive Director C.J. Hirschfield. "This whole place, from Willie the Whale to the Jolly Trolley, is very whimsical at any time of day; but it's even more so by moonlight."

Buki the Clown, a face painter, will transform little ones into princesses, pirates, queens and clowns. The Grammy-winning Pacific Boychoir will sing. The Snow Queen will perform "Tales From Winter Wonderland," accompanied by her guitar and her puppet, Snowflake the Unicorn. (Old timers might recognize her as Jaqueline Lynaugh, Fairyland's beloved Blue Fairy.)

Every child will have a chance to meet Santa and have pictures taken with him. While they're waiting, they'll be given hot cocoa or apple cider to sip.

And for grownups who still have a little last-minute holiday shopping to do, the Magic Lamp Toy Store will be open, offering interactive, educational, child-friendly books, games, costumes and toys.

Admission will remain the same: $6 for everyone.

As always, no child will be admitted without an adult, and no adult will be admitted without a child, for security reasons.

For this one week only, Fairyland will be open from 12 to 7 p.m. The park will be open until 2:30 p.m. Dec. 24, then it will be closed between Christmas and New Year's. Fairyland will resume its normal winter hours -- from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday -- on Jan. 2.
