Oakland - Churches, business owners and civic groups will come together Saturday to distribute Christmas toys to disadvantaged children.

"Children in our community need blessings," said Brondon Reems, senior pastor at Center of Hope Community Church in East Oakland. "Churches need to join forces with businesses, nonprofits and work together so blessings flow from inside our churches to the community."

Toys will be distributed from noon to 2 p.m. at Sweet Jimmie's Entertainment Complex, 1731 San Pablo Ave.

Also participating will be members of Sweet Jimmie's Charities, Center of Hope Church, Christian Bible Fellowship, the Rev. Leon Stanton, the Oakland Black Board of Trade and Commerce, the Globe Newspaper Group and Lakeshore Clothing.

On Saturday, Foothill Square Shopping Center will distribute toys from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 10700 MacArthur Blvd., during its Christmas Holiday Festival.

"We want to give back to the community and express our appreciation for their support," said Al Cobino, a spokesman for the event.

There will also be food and crafts booths and an appearance by Santa Claus.

Also from noon until 4 p.m., at the East Oakland Senior Center, 9255 Edes Ave., coats and shoes will be distributed to the needy by City Councilmember Larry Reid (East Oakland hills-Elmhurst) and Council president Ignacio de la Fuente (Glenview-Fruitvale).

Sweet Jimmie's Charities has been providing toys for underprivileged children since 1990, said Jimmie Ward, CEO and founder.

"We are pleased to have so many join this alliance of churches, community groups and organizations," said Ward.

Tom Cloman, chairman of the board, Oakland Black Board of Trade and Commerce, said, "I hope more local companies help us in this endeavor. We need to demonstrate that we care about the children as we wish them a happy holiday season."
