There are current openings on PRAC. We are seeking candidates from all backgrounds and all parts of the city who are interested in preserving the city's parks and recreation facilities and who have one or more of the following desired work or volunteer experience: planning and implementing major projects experience with recreational programs mediation skills enthusiasm for Oakland PRAC meets the 1st Wednesday of the month from 4:30 to 6:00 pm at the Garden Center at Lakeside Park. Oakland kids learn gardening basics at summer camp

Ten kids are playing computer games as Peter Collier, the City of Oakland's community gardening program coordinator, walks into a classroom at the Mosswood Recreation Center on Wednesday morning. The kids gradually pull away from the screens and line up at the door to head outside to the Mosswood community garden, as Collier greets them and gives them an update on tomatoes, beets and sweet potatoes the kids planted earlier in the summer.

Sheets are to the wind on a warm summer's day as a fleet of small sailing dinghies sets sail across Lake Merritt. Downtown Oakland's recreational centerpiece is abuzz with activity as the Lake Merritt Boating Center hosts a variety of youth boating programs for the summer. Landlubbers with no prior experience can start out with the basic sailing camp, learning the parts of the boat, nautical terms, and how to tack, jibe, steer and hove to. Confidence builds quickly, and by day two, many of the kids are sailing dinghies on their own.

The Lake Merritt Boating Center has sailboats available for the public to rent-ranging in size from 8-foot prams to 14-foot keel boats-provided the renter can pass a short quiz to prove their sailing knowledge. The center also has dozens of kayaks, pedal boats, rowboats and canoes available to rent as well (no quiz necessary). A 12-foot Boston Whaler patrols the waters, as well, ready to scoop up anyone who capsizes.
On Saturday, the boating center is celebrating National Recreation and Parks Month by offering free boat rentals from 1-3 p.m.
