California's Closet: From Flappers to Rappers
This exhibit demonstrates how California's cultual diversity, entertainment industry and leisure lifestyle have had a major impact on clothing developed in our state in the 20th century. On display will be exceptional pieces from costume collections of the Oakland Museum of California, the state's closet: from trousseau lingerie designed by Gump's c. 1940 to decorated "hippie style" jeans and shirts; from the allure of a dress by Hollywood film designer Adrian to the James Galanos couture for Nancy Reagan.

California Cultures Book Fair
First Friday!

Balafo Annual showcase of local children’s authors and illustrators, plus storytellers and performers celebrate learning through books. Authors include National Book award winner Joyce Carol Thomas ("Marked by Fire," "Hush Songs," "Brown Honey" and "Broomwheat Tea"), Karen English ("Francie" and "Strawberry Moon"), and Katherine Sturtevant ("At the Sign of the Star"). The ensemble Balafo performs African Roots music. Yvonne Browne will lead a book-making workshop for families.

Black California: Community Dialogues
First Friday!

National Book award winner Joyce Carol Thomas is featured in the forum examining current events in the context of California history with a focus on the African Diaspora experiences. Our first topic of discussion will deal with literacy issues in the African American community and why writers choose to make contributions to children's literature. Our speaker, national award winning author of children, teen and adult books, Joyce Carol Thomas, will present The Joy of Writing Children's Books.

CirCA Members Event, join CirCA members for an exclusive presentation by the OMCA’s Artist in Residence, Cristina Lei Rodriguez, revealing her experiences as an artist working in a public space and the processes she utilizes to create her art. Conversation with the Artist in Residence Lecture
Installation and performance artist Cristina Lei Rodriguez will show slides and discuss the community artwork she designed for the museum as our first Artist in Residence. Daydreaming in the California Landscape is an assemblage mural made from mostly found objects from everyday life, recycled and transformed to build a fantastic landscape of California. Rodriguez will describe the process of creating the mural with the help of hundreds of students and museum visitors. This event is co-sponsored by CirCA, the museum's membership and volunteer circle for adults in their 20's and 30's.

Annual Awards and Dinner Dance

Celebrating Black History
Join the science center in celebrating Black History Month. The day begins with a choir performances in the morning. There wil be lots of hands-on activities and meetings with the scientists. The Musical Traditions of Working California.

Nigerian singer, songwriter, and bassist Ken Okulolo features the spirited dance melodies of his critically acclaimed West African Highlife Band alongside the traditional rhthyms of the Nigerian Brothers. An all-star ensemble of eight musicians and dancers electify the stage with vocal harmonies, intertwining guitars, and exciting percussion.Through call and response patterns, movement routines, and rhthmic hand-clapping, the audience is taken on a whirlwind tour of African village life and the international rhthyms that have emerged from the culture and folklore of West Africa.

Linda Tillery and the Cultural Heritage Choir
One of the most celebrated vocalists from the Bay Area, Linda Tillery has achieved international distinction in the African American musical scene.Through vibrant field hollers and other work songs, animated play songs, moving spirituals, and lively percussion, the Cultural Heritage Choir traces folk traditions from the African American experience from their origins in the deep south to the emergence in modern pop culture.

The City of Oakland's Committee to Commemorate Black History Month presents the annual black history celebration. This year’s program is dedicated to former City Manager Henry Gardner. This year's theme is “The Souls of Black Folk: A Healing Vision of Faith, Family and Freedom.” Featuring entertainment by Dimano Coura West African Dancers and the Dream Dance Troupe.
