'100 Families' Shows The Power Of Art

A youth's body lying face down, hand imprints circling the world, and Chinese-English poems are just a few examples of the art created by more than 100 Oakland families who joined together and to strengthen one another and to counter street crimes. Their artwork, including quilts, sculptures, masks, and paintings, is entitled "100 Families Oakland" and is currently on display at the Oakland Museum of California

Update: Evening swimming will remain suspended while the lighting at Lions Pool is non-operational. The lighting is currently being worked on at the pool and the repair crews could not give a time frame when the lighting would be back online

The Aquatics Unit has halted evening swimming activities at Lions Pool until further notice due to the pool lights. The mural isn't complete yet, but its enormous size already has captured the attention of community members, local businesses and people driving through the Lake Merritt area. Named the Lakeview Mural Project, the giant painting sits next to the Grand Avenue Interstate 580 onramps and Lakeview Elementary School

After a decade of working out of inadequate or overpriced rental space, a collective of community organizers and artists will finally make their new home in a building of their own at the EastSide Cultural Center. The cultural center is located in East Oakland's San Antonio district, one of the city's most ethnically diverse neighborhoods

With the click of a mouse, Buffalo Bill Cody comes into view on his Oakland farewell tour in 1910. Sick people lie on cots in a makeshift hospital at the Oakland Auditorium during the 1918 flu pandemic. Mark Twain grins with a group of folks at Piedmont's sulphur springs in 1868. These reflections of long ago, and some not so long ago, are among some 250 images of Oakland, Emeryville and Piedmont that can be viewed and downloaded off the Oakland Public Library's new online archive of local history
