The atoms in the air seem to sizzle with anticipation. All of a sudden a high E-flat is belted out on the trumpet. No, wait the lead guitar of a punk band blasts a power chord. Then five African drums start beating fiercely. These are only a few of the sounds expected this weekend on the five stages of Oakland's sixth Art and Soul festival

The Greatest Show on Earth has a new act. This one's outside the big top; Performers teaching their skills to encourage youths to be more fit. CircusFit,launched last year, came to Oakland this week. Major League Baseball's all-time stolen base leader Rickey Henderson made his first base steal at a Bushrod Park field in North Oakland. Had it not been for those fields, Henderson said Friday, he might have never gone on to shatter Lou Brock's record of 938 stolen bases with 1,406.

On July 30th the City of Oakland sent three teams to compete in the Northern California Lifeguard Games. There were 35 competing teams at the event where the competition was fierce. The Office of Parks and Recreation had a day to be proud of and showed the rest of the Bay Area that there is pride and talent at the Oakland Pools
