The American Express Partners in Preservation program and the National Trust for Historic Preservation hope to preserve some popular and lesser-known sites and buildings in the Bay Area. Twenty-five sites in the Bay Area have been chosen as eligible for grants totaling $1 million, and the public is invited to help select their favorites

For decades the Cleveland Cascade, nestled between apartments along Lakeshore and Merritt avenues, was buried beneath dirt and residents using the park never knew what was underneath. That is, until a couple of years ago, when community members excavated the site directly across from Lake Merritt, revealing it once had a set of cascades running down the middle of the park
