Safety issues are covered including right of way rules, collision avoidance, person in the water recovery, heaving to and reefing. Upon completion of a written test, graduates will receive an American Sailing Association logbook sticker which signifies them as effective crew for San Francisco Bay sailing and qualified to charter a 20-foot boot in light to moderate conditions in familiar waters.

Dinghy Skills I
The Dinghy Skills course is a wonderful start for many sailors. This class provides a basic sailing course taught aboard dinghies on Lake Merritt. The students will learn the basics of sailing - safety, boat handling, sail trim, points of sail, knots, sailing theory, capsize recovery, parts of a boat, and sailing language. A perfect experience for the novice or returning sailor. All students will be issued a skills card upon completion of a written test. Students should be able to swim.

Dinghy Skills II
This course is taught aboard the more advanced JY15 dinghy at the Jack London Aquatic Center on the Oakland Estuary. With more open water the students will gain more experience learning to sail. Skills emphasized include crew work, person overboard procedures, tides and currents considerations, rules of the road and an introduction to racing. A skills card will be issued upon completion of a written test. Students should be able to swim and a wetsuit is recommended.
