Valuable Outdoor Learning in Downtown Oakland
The Brackish Backyard program is an outdoor environmental science program for grades 3 ~ 6th.

The program exposes Oakland’s urban youth to incredible outdoor opportunities right in their own backyard!

During the regular school year, teachers schedule one or two full days to bring their class to the Lake Merritt Boating Center (LMBC). The day begins with an introduction to basic boating skills and safety. Topics include the proper use of Personal Floatation Devices (PFD), Rules of the Road, water safety, basic boat handling, rowing techniques, lake boundaries, and park rules.

Students then board LMBC’s array of boats to peer into the depths of one of the most unique lakes in the world, gathering scientific data as they go. Activities include collecting plants and animal samples, measuring dissolved oxygen, depth soundings, monitoring tidal fluctuations, and assessing the environmental impact of human activity around the Lake. Students spend the day as field researchers exploring the ecology of one of Oakland’s most treasured natural resources.

By the days end, students will be equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to utilize the Lake for their own investigations. Students are encouraged to come back to Lake Merritt for further recreation and exploration with their friends and families. All participants receive a card entitling them to three (3) free rentals of LMBC’s pedal boats, canoes, and kayaks .

School Group Excursions
Up to thirty (30) students, with a fee of $3.00 per student
Program runs Monday through Friday, 9:00 am ~ 2:00 pm from September through March and is accessible via BART and Public Transportation.

To register your class or for additional information, please contact the Lake Merritt Boating Center at (510) 238-2196.
