Boating Safety
Safety First! Boating Safety is our #1 Priority

The Lake Merritt Boating Center (LMBC) is committed to making boating and water safety our number one focus while providing educational and recreational opportunities. Thanks to generous grants from the State of California’s Department of Boating and Waterways and various other organizations, the LMBC is able to continue to expand and improve its high quality boating programs. Educational materials are readily available to the community, so drop by the Lake Merritt Boating Center today!

Swim Evaluation
Before classes begin, all students are required to undergo a swimming competency evaluation offered at Oakland public pools or any pool of your choice. Students are evaluated on their ability to swim 75 feet and float or tread water for five minutes, as well as their general water comfort. A personal flotation device may be used in the five-minute float. A valid Red Cross Swimmer, Intermediate Swimmer, Lifesaving, or Basic Sailing Card will be accepted in lieu of the swim evaluation.
