About Our Conductors
Oakland Civic Orchestra, Established in 1992

Martha Stoddard Martha Stoddard, Artistic Director earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Humboldt State University and her Master of Music degree from San Francisco State University, where she studied flute, conducting and composition. Her compositions have been performed at the American Composer’s Forum San Francisco Chapter, by The Avenue Winds, by Carla Rees at the San Francisco Chamber Wind Festival and in London, UK, by the San Francisco Choral Artists, San Francisco Composers’ Chamber Orchestra, Schwungvoll!, the Community Women’s Orchestra, Womensing, on the New Directions Series of the Bakersfield Symphony, in the Trinity Chamber Concert Series and the New Music Forum Festival of Contemporary Music. In 2008 she received a commission from the Community Women’s Orchestra (SF Bay Area)for a new work for the orchestra’s 25th anniversary celebration. Ms. Stoddard is a featured performer on alto flute on in John Bilotta’s Shadow Tree (Capstone Records CPS-8787) and in John Thow’s Cantico (Palatino label #1001) Marika Kuzma, conductor. Ms. Stoddard is the Artistic Director of the Oakland Civic Orchestra and Associate Conductor of the San Francisco Composers’ Chamber Orchestra.

Kate McLoughlin, Photo by Katrin Gaethke Kate McLoughlin, Associate Conductor, completed a master's degree in orchestral conducting at McGill University (Montreal, Canada) in 2004. A native of Vermont, she completed undergraduate work in bassoon performance and music theory(also at McGill) and obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in June of 2002. As guest conductor, Ms. McLoughlin has appeared with the McGill Symphony Orchestra, the Savoy Society of Montreal, and L' Harmonie nationale des juenes du Canada. In addition to her position with the Oakland Civic Orchestra, Kate is the assistant conductor of the Berkeley Youth Orchestra and plays bassoon in Jack O' The Clock, a band whose sound can be described as "jangly mix of concert-hall agility, acoustic rock drive, and junk shop scouring."
