After the successful completion of the program’s training and community service components, each participant will be presented with a bicycle, bicycle safety equipment, a safety helmet, reflective t-shirt and a graduating certificate of appreciation.

Team leadership is a central theme of this program. Youth learn self respect, discipline, self-esteem, teamwork, and leadership skills. The participants learn how teamwork can accomplish important goals; and they also become aware of their relationship to the environment as future stewards in helping to preserve and conserve limited resources.

Ceremony
The Earn Your Bike Program presents a monthly graduation honoring those dedicated youth in the Oakland community for their participation and commitment to bicycle safety and awareness. Youth completing the 32-hour program are invited to a graduation. The graduation is held on the very last day of the four-week program at the sponsoring recreation center. Graduates are encouraged to invite their family and friends. The program begins at 6:00pm with an introduction by the program coordinator.

The graduation is a much anticipated ceremony to honor and show appreciation to all participants and to encourage the continued usage of safety equipment with recreational activities, with such special guests and City Associates such as the Honorable Jerry Brown, Mayor of Oakland, Dr. Harry Edwards, Director of Parks and Recreation and Richard Word, Chief of Police.

Safety equipment distributed upon graduation includes safety helmets, reflective t-shirts and a must for any fun and safe bicycle excursion alone, with friends or with the entire family!

Please Note: Bicycles and safety equipment may be limited to quantities on hand, and will be presented to participants when available. It is the intent of the EYBP to provide youth with safety equipment and bicycles in order to promote bicycle safety, to increase bicycle helmet usage, and to reduce the number of accidents involving children in Oakland.
