The Earn Your Bike Program provides youth, ages 10 thru 18 years, an opportunity to earn a bicycle, safety helmet, t-shirt, certificate of completion and safety materials.

In order to graduate from the program youth must complete 32 hours of community service, bicycle safety, bicycle repair, and the value of work by beautifying our parks, playgrounds, recreation centers and neighborhoods. EYBP is a four week program and operates Monday through Thursday from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m.

Week 1 The first week the program consists of bicycle safety classes. Education on vehicle code, rules of the road, correct way to fit a helmet and the importance of bicycle safety, by reading, writing, and reviewing safety videos.
Week 2 The second week consists of community service, clean up around neighborhoods, recreation centers, parks and playgrounds. Youth learn the value of work through commitment to teamwork and community service. Also, learning to be aware of their relationship to the environment in helping to preserve and conserve limited resources.
Week 3 The third week will concentrate on bicycle repair workshops, where youth learn hands on repair. Youth learn how important it is to maintain their bicycles to ensure safety before every recreational bicycle ride.
Week 4 The fourth and final week youth practice and demonstrate safe riding skills through the simulation course.

After the successful completion of the program’s training and community service components, each participant will be presented with a bicycle, bicycle safety equipment, a safety helmet, reflective t-shirt and a graduating certificate of appreciation.

Safety equipment distributed upon graduation includes safety helmets, reflective t-shirts and a must for any fun and safe bicycle excursion alone, with friends or with the entire family!

Please Note: Bicycles and safety equipment may be limited to quantities on hand, and will be presented to participants when available. It is the intent of the EYBP to provide youth with safety equipment and bicycles in order to promote bicycle safety, to increase bicycle helmet usage, and to reduce the number of accidents involving children in Oakland.
