Services Offered in the Wildfire Prevention District

Inspection
The Oakland Fire Department conducts approximately 25,000 public and private inspections annually in the high fire hazard area. Inspections are mandated by City of Oakland Ordinance No. 11640 and 12556 C. M. S. and the State of California.

Debris Removal Program
Property owners in the high fire hazard area may participate in the Debris Removal Program to help reduce fire hazards by disposing of the excess brush and grasses that must be cleared from their properties annually. For more information, please contact, Waste Management of Alameda County at (510) 613-8710, or refer to City of Oakland, Public Works Environmental Services Division at (510) 238-SAVE (7283).
Yard Debris Service

Unlimited Yard Trimmings Collection Service is a year- round service, just put your yard trimmings material with your weekly green debris.

Use your own cans, 30-gallon heavy duty paper bags (no plastic will be picked up) or secure branches smaller than 4’ long by 6’’ with string in a bundle.

FREE Curbside Tree & Brush Chipping Service
This program is offered to property owners in the high fire hazard area, at no charge. Call: (510) 238-7388 to schedule a pick up. This limited, free tree and brush chipping service is available to assist residents in reducing the fuel load on their property.

The homeowner will:

  • Call (510)238-7388 to request chipping service.
  • Leave branches no greater than 4” in diameter.
  • Stack in piles that are no greater than 4’ by 4’.
  • No more than 2 stacks per pick up.
  • Material in plastic bags will not be picked up.
  • Will not leave piles of leaves.
  • Can request chips to be removed or left on property. The chipping crew will call back to schedule a day and time for service

    Public Education
    Public Education is offered to the citizens and students in the high fire hazard area, in the form of Homeowners Association meetings, Special Presentations at School, and Earth Day Activities.
